Description
Sepia photo of the gravestone memorializing famous aviator Charles Lindbergh. It is located on the grounds of a small church (see this gallery) near the small town of Hana, off the Hana Highway, HI-360, on the island of Maui, Hawaii.
The inscription on the stone reads as follows:
Charles A. Lindbergh, Born Michigan 1902, Died Maui 1974, . . . If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea . . . C.A.L.
The dark stones around the grave marker are actually lava rock from nearby Haleakala volcano, rounded and smoothed by waters on the south shore of Maui.
Charles Lindbergh completed the first nonstop transatlantic flight on May 21, 1927. This 33-hour trip from New York to Paris forever changed the life of Lindbergh and the future of aviation. Hailed as a hero, the shy young pilot from Minnesota was unwillingly thrust into the public eye. His unwelcome fame would later haunt Lindbergh when his infant son was kidnapped for ransom and killed in 1932. Charles Lindbergh was married to the famous writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh.
