Description
Curled swords of new growth on a subtropical sago palm, or Cycadaceae revoluta (C. revoluta), in an uncropped color macro photograph in beautiful shades of green with lots of texture and interest.
Sago palms are gender-specific, either male or female. This one, a female, unfolds its new growth beginning with what looks like a clump of feathers at the center of the base of mature fronds. The feathers become these curly sword-shaped fronds, and then the sharp, pointed leaflets of a mature sago palm. Male sago palms produce what looks like a tall pineapple at the center.
These palms also reproduce by way of pups at the underside. The pups are the same gender as the parent plant. They can be dug out and planted elsewhere or simply cut off when shaping the plant.
Nikon D80, Nikkor 50mm/f1.8 lens with circular polarizer and ND filter, shot outdoors with available light.
