Description
Corner facade of the Earl Warren Building, which houses the Supreme Court of California in San Francisco. This government building, located at 350 McAllister, is part of the California State Office Complex in the Civic Center National Historic District, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A six-floor Classic Revival beaux-arts landmark, it was built in 1922 by Bliss & Faville.
Historically important as the scene of the founding of the United Nations, and the drafting and signing of post-World War II treaties with Japan.
Earl Warren (1891-1974), First Lieutenant United States Army, was a Republican attorney who practiced in nearby Oakland, and the only person elected governor of California three times. He was an immensely popular California governor when President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court. He served from 1953 to 1969, becoming Chief Justice. He died in Washington, D.C. and is buried with his wife at Arlington National Cemetery. A simple cross is the only ornamentation on their headstone. A cross can also be seen in the small pediment window featured here between the two arched windows.
