Description
On the horizon line and under a huge white cloud on a blue sky in Galveston, Texas USA, the Galveston Sailboat Regatta is underway. Two dozen sailboats can be seen on the deep blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and an unidentifiable onlooker can be seen in the foreground. Captured October 25, 2012.
The city of Galveston is located on Galveston Island, about 45 minutes southeast of downtown Houston via Interstate 45, and is bounded by Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. A regatta is a series of boat races. The term typically describes racing events of rowed or sailed watercraft. A regatta often includes social and promotional activities which surround the racing event and, except in the case of boat type (or class) championships, is usually named for the town or venue where the event takes place.
Although regattas are typically amateur competitions, they are usually formally structured events, with comprehensive rules describing the schedule and procedures of the event. Regattas may be organized as championships for a particular area or type of boat, but are often held just for the joy of competition, camaraderie, and general promotion of the sport. The Galveston Bay Cruising Association sponsors a number of regattas throughout the year.
A towering cumulus cloud fills the blue sky directly over the regatta, and whitecap waves fill the foreground along the shore. The sand outcropping on which the man in the foreground is standing is called a jetty. Digital effects have been used, obscuring the identity of the man and giving the image the look of a painting.

Thank you, Chris! I was "kidnapped" on my birthday and brought here, not knowing we'd be treated to great food and a regatta! The sky, too, was amazing!
