Description
Mountain Shadows Lobby. Scottsdale Arizona 1993 by Connie Fox.
Painterly image based upon an original 1993 photo by the artist of the spacious lobby of the world-famous Mountain Shadows Resort. Several artistic effects have been added, giving it the look of a textured painting.
The landmark resort closed in 2004, and had been boarded up for ten years when demolition began on the property in February 2014. Plans for redevelopment call for a boutique hotel and homes, but many problems have come up along the way.
Photographed early on a summer morning, when no people were in the lobby. Both the mountain and resort have long been beloved landmarks of Phoenix, Arizona, USA. Camelback Mountain derived its name from its shape, for it resembles the hump and head of a kneeling camel. Mountain Shadows derived its name from being in the shadow of Camelback Mountain.
Mountain Shadows resort is where my senior prom was held, and where my family and I stayed in 1993. Summer rates were then $59 a night, a bargain for such a nice place. But it was the off-season, with temperatures well above 100 degrees, even by 8 a.m.
