Description
Postcard-perfect photograph of a portion of the winding road to Hana, HI-360, which hugs the coastline on the island of Maui, Hawaii, USA. If your idea of a fun-filled adventure includes 620 curves and 59 narrow bridges, coupled with glorious scenery, consider including this road-trip if you come to Maui.
Though a convertible with the top down would appeal to some, I strongly recommend booking a van tour in advance. If you take your own car, or rent a car, you will be forced to turn back just past the little town of Hana because the road runs out. Vans, however, are allowed to travel this rugged, unpaved section. Your van driver will provide lots of information about Maui, allow you to stop for pictures, and spare you from having to drive back on all those switchbacks at night.
Taking a van will also allow you to circle the island of Maui on your tour, and you will arrive back at your hotel in time for dinner. You will also get to stop at a lovely winery for a tasting, visit the Charles Lindbergh grave in a charming churchyard, see bicyclists sharply descend from volcano to rugged coast, and see a pineapple farm along the way.
The experienced guide for our group of eight was knowledgeable and adept at driving this road that we were able to relax and just take it all in. Even so, this trip is not for the faint of heart. There is some hiking involved, such as descending steep steps to a black-sand beach with sea-caves, and much more. But you can opt out if you wish and take pictures from above. I would do this day-trip again in a heartbeat. If you go, just be sure to arm yourself with plenty of information well in advance. Aloha.
Shot with a film camera, outdoors with available light, and later scanned from a large print. Reprocessed in Photoshop in 2014.
