Description
Black-and-white image of the vintage Weimar Motel, Weimar, Texas. Many motels of this type, so prevalent across the United States in the Fifties and Sixties, brought in business with neon signs beckoning weary travelers in cars with no air conditioning. It was a treat to cool off at an air-conditioned motel for the night.
The next step up was the addition of swimming pools. Without pools, which my brothers and I began to require once we discovered them, these small motels had a tough time competing. Next I remember Howard Johnson hotels changing the American landscape with not only air conditioning and swimming pools, but a restaurant and other amenities. The rest is history. Most classic motels, some with covered parking (as this one has between each bungalow), sadly fell into disrepair, and many have been demolished for the sake of progress.
Fortunately this motel has been well-maintained, with fresh paint, hanging baskets of bougainvilla, and chairs associated with that era. I found it charming--a reminder of road-trips with my family and growing up in a simpler time.
Nikon D7100, Nikkor 50mm/f1.8 lens and ND filter, shot outdoors with available light. Converted to black-and-white a cropped to the equivalent of a 5x7, ideal for greeting cards, with large sizes available for wall art. This image is also available in color. You will find it in this gallery, along with images of its neon signs advertising air conditioning and vacancy.
