Description
Raindrops on colorful leaves of a large foundation plant, nandina domestica, during winter in Texas. In cold weather, the leaves take on various hues of purple and red, in addition to green, making for an interesting shrub that requires little or no maintenance. In this color photo, the red and green hues dominate, with raindrops clearly visible and a few stray oak leaves. Elsewhere, this shrub would sport these colors in autumn.
Nandina is a widely cultivated Asian evergreen shrub of the barberry family. It is hardy, weathering both hot and freezing conditions, and needs no trimming or special care. Not only do the leaves add seasonal color and berries to the landscape (with beautiful reds and greens for Christmas!), they create a graceful effect in the breeze. Nandina domestica is the taller version (4-5 feet). Also available as "dwarf nandina," about a foot tall and ideal for borders.

Thanks, DiDi! I love the strong reds and greens amidst a range of other colors, and how it all changes with the seasons.
