Description
This succulent, found thriving outdoors in a rock-bed in Chappell Hill, Texas, appears to be an agave plant. With more than 500 species of agave plant, ultimately I abandoned my search for the correct botanical name for this particular species. Perhaps you will have better success than I did, though I came to appreciate the vast variety of agaves.
According to McNeal Growers, Texas, "(These) succulents are a very large and broad set of unrelated plants that are grouped together based on the fact they all have thickened parts that store water. Many plant families have some members that have developed internal water storage as an adaptation to dry climates. That adaptation to dry climates is what makes them very useful to us here in Texas with (our) dry and erratic climate."
Agaves are wonderful garden plants and make excellent potted plants as well. These primarily Mexican plants come in many different sizes and colors, though the general look is an elegant symmetrical rosette made up of spiny, succulent, often stiff and well-armed leaves with little or no stem. Geoff Stein went on to write about agaves: Needing little water and little fertilizer, agaves are plants that require little attention yet reward the grower with a unique southwest look and artful presence."
