Description
Colorful street scene at Second and Colorado in the Warehouse District of downtown Austin, Texas, shot in October 2008 outside the second location of the Austin Childrens Museum. The words Second Street can be seen on the pavers leading to the bright green corner building, leased at that time to the museum. Since this is Austin, do not be surprised that there is an artistically painted blue cow decorating the sidewalk.
In 2013, having outgrown this location and ten-year rent-free lease, Austin Childrens Museum relocated to their permanent 40,000 square foot facility at Mueller. Those who remember this location may want to preserve the memory by adding this image to their art collection. Please feel free to do so, and enjoy your purchase for many years to come.
I love this scene, for it captures the fun, eclectic personality of Austin, described as an idiosyncratic university town. Having lived in Texas for more than four decades, it struck me that only in Austin, capitol of the great state of Texas, would one find a blue cow painted with black birds (or maybe bats from a nearby early evening bat flight), decorating the sidewalk in a busy downtown area. Note the contemporary wood pergola providing shade. Even the trash container is beautifully designed and environmentally friendly, as is Austin.
This bovine art most likely originated as one of many life-sized fiberglass cow sculptures transformed by Austin-area artists and displayed on the streets of Austin for three months prior to auction. In one article I came across (no year provided), final bids ranged from $10,000 to a world-record-breaking $150,000, with an average bid price of $33,660. It said typically CowParade auctions have raised, on average, $7,500 per cow. In this case, more than 20 cows not sold on the live auction block were sold at a silent auction immediately following the live auction event. Those cows went for a minimum of $2,250 and up to $10,000, raising $1.49 million for The Superhero Kids Endowment at the Dell Childrens Medical Center of Central Texas.
