Description
Black-and-white photo of the gravestone marking the location where the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh is buried. It is on the grounds of a small church (see this gallery) near the small town of Hana, off the Hana Highway, HI-360, on the island of Maui, Hawaii.
The inscription on the stone reads simply:
Charles A. Lindbergh, Born Michigan 1902, Died Maui 1974, . . . If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea . . . C.A.L.
The dark stones around the grave plaque are lava from nearby Haleakala volcano, rounded and smoothed by waters on the south shore of Maui. There are no people and no sky in this image.
Charles Lindbergh completed the first nonstop transatlantic flight on May 21, 1927. This 33-hour trip from New York to Paris forever changed Lindberghs life and the future of aviation. Hailed as a hero, the shy young pilot from Minnesota was unwillingly thrust into the public eye. Lindberghs unwelcome fame would later haunt him when his infant son was kidnapped for ransom and killed in 1932. Charles Lindbergh was married to the famous writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh.
I shot this image in 2006, being careful not to stand on the grave, and reprocessed it in Photoshop Elements in 2014. It was converted to black-and-white. You will find a counterpart sepia-tinted image in this gallery, as well as a sepia image of the charming little church at Hana.
