Description
Curled swords of new growth on a subtropical sago palm, or Cycadaceae revoluta (C. revoluta), in an uncropped vertical black-and-white macro photograph with a sepia tint. One of a trio, designed to be used alone or together, it will lend an elegant look while providing botanical interest in its luminous detail and sparkly golden color. You will find two horizontal companion pieces in this gallery. A lovely, interesting way to fill a wall of your home or office.
Sago palms are gender-specific, either male or female. This one, a female, unfolds its new growth beginning with what looks like a clump of feathers at the center of mature fronds. The feathers mature into these curly sword-shaped fronds and become the sharp, pointed leaflets of a mature sago palm. Male sago palms produce what looks like a tall pineapple at the center.
These palms also reproduce by way of pups at the underside. The pups are the same gender as the parent plant. They can be dug out and planted elsewhere or simply cut off when shaping the plant.
Nikon D80, Nikkor 50mm/f1.8 lens (circular polarizer) and ND filter, shot outdoors with available light and converted to black-and-white, then given a sepia tint.
