Description
Vertical digital arts painting of beautiful Sonoran Desert scenery in the area called Tortilla Flats, the only remaining stagecoach stop on the famous Apache Trail. This was shot about 18 miles northeast of Apache Junction on Highway 88, the Apache Trail, which begins east of the Phoenix, Arizona, USA, metropolitan area. This image features cactus in the foreground and, behind it, a long-stemmed flowering desert cactus, ocotillo.
If you have ever wondered what it means when a road is marked by a dotted line on the map, you will learn firsthand by driving the rugged but well-maintained Apache Trail. Allow plenty of time for your spectacular drive through the beautiful Superstition Wilderness. Distances are deceptive.
The road was built in the early 1900s as a supply route for the construction of Roosevelt Dam. President Theodore Roosevelt compared the trail to a journey through the Alps. Jagged ridges, towering cliffs, sheer rock walls, and breathtaking views reward the visitor. The road is paved from Apache Junction to Canyon Lake. Then it continues on as 25 miles of dirt road. Watch for narrow bridges, blind curves, and sheer drops. Also, I suggest you add several extra hours to your estimated time of arrival at your destination. Ours was Holbrook, and we arrived well after dark. Not what we had planned.
Shot in the summer of 1993 with a Minolta Freedom Escort and Kodak film. Scanned in 2014 and given a painterly look. You will more of these restored Arizona film images in this Arizona Gallery. Although they are limited to smaller print sizes, they would make a beautiful grouping (perhaps on ready-to-hang canvas) for a wall of your home or office. They have been sized to fit the 5x7 greeting card format, too, making the cards easy to frame yourself.

Connie, Excellent Sonoran Capture. This looks like my yard in Vail, Arizona, so I was drawn to it! F/L Jerry
