Description
Original 1993 film photo of the Native American mural by Hopi artist Fred Kabotie that greets visitors when they enter Desert View Watchtower, a 70-foot-high stone building on the East rim of the Grand Canyon in the state of Arizona, USA.
The Watchtower is located at Desert View, elevation 7450 feet, at the East Entrance Station of Grand Canyon National Park, where Highway 64 becomes East Rim Drive. When you arrive at the Grand Canyon, Desert View Watchtower is your first stop.
Desert View Watchtower was designed by Mary Jane Colter, who also designed Hopi House (in my Arizona Gallery), The Lookout, and Hermits Rest, and renovated Bright Angel Lodge in 1935. Desert View Watchtower is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
