Eyebrow Windows in Bellville Texas by Connie Fox
Vintage Architecture Fine-art Photography
In the town square of Bellville, Texas, originally settled in 1822, you will find charming antique buildings with eyebrow windows such as these. This style of arched window dates to the early Victorian period. This image, shown here in maroon, teal, and beige, is also available in classic black-and-white as well as sepia. You will find at least two more styles of eyebrow windows in my vintage and Texas Galleries.
Bellville was named for brothers Thomas and James Bell, who came to Texas from Florida in 1822 as some of Stephen F. Austin’s earliest settlers. By popular vote, Bellville was named for them, and has served as the Austin County seat since 1846. Most of the residents at that time were farmers, but with the coming of the railroad, Bellville quickly grew from 300 to 1000 residents within three years. In 1883, there were six saloons on the square alone.
The Courthouse Square remains as it was laid out in 1846, and many historic buildings such as this one have been transformed into a collection of unusual and unique shops and businesses. Numerous downtown buildings in Bellville have been returned to their original design, and restoration has revealed interesting designs and lettering on the fronts of buildings. Don't miss the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company image in this gallery. For many years, those words were covered with stucco. No longer!
