Ginger lily plant in full bloom. An assassin bug is clearly visible too. He is sitting on a small white bud, though unseen at the time by the photographer, who could have lost an eye had this dangerous insect decided to attack.
Each sweetly scented spiral cluster of white buds is nestled in one of the variegated green-and-yellow broad leaves of this hardy tropical and subtropical shrub. In this image, one bud has opened and shows its true colors, yellow with a throat of vivid orange. The orange thorax of the insect repeats the orange tones. That is all the cooperation one can expect from him, for his sting is very painful and can even cause blindness if he takes aim at the eye. Assassin bugs are related to bed bugs.
On a happier note, ginger lily blossoms are also called garland flower, and are used for garlands such as Hawaiian leis.

This true aesthetic loves beautiful things, from architecture to the intricate details of flowers and plants. A native Californian who lived in Arizona before settling in Texas, I love nature, topography, and exploring small towns, looking for old buildings, unique objects, and rust. I enjoy making scenes look interesting and natural, as I saw them, and worthy of a place in your home, your office, your life. For 15 years I worked as a dental hygienist. Then I spent 25 years as an award-winning writer, graphic designer, and editorial consultant--skills I still use in this venue and in helping others with special projects. This unique background, requiring discernment and perfection, helps ensure the quality of my work. I hope you will...

Wow, Janice! What a delightful comment. Thank you so much for that, and for sharing this image. The assassin bug was a surprise. I'm more cautious now.

Thank you for such a fine comment, Aaron, spoken like the true artist you are. Love what you said about the bug. If I had set up the tripod, I might have tripped over it and lost my good light, as well as the assassin bug. Next time, I might check the plant for bugs. No bad surprises!

Gorgeous rhythm to the arting of this image. Thank you for the educative description about the assassin bug. Pretty little devil, nice of it to pose for you, and not bother you. The Variegated leaves of the plant add so much appeal to its visual interest. You have a steady hand and a good eye for this kind of wonderful photography. VF

Thank you, Chris, for your kind comments on my flower image. The bug was indeed a bonus. After researching him, I'm thankful I didn't know he was there, or I would have run for the hills! Little did I know that his bite can actually cause blindness. Whoa!
