Description
Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse with three flags at Port Lavaca, Texas, USA. The hexagonal wood structure arrived at Matagorda Bay early in 1858, having been shipped to Galveston from Baltimore. Originally surrounded by water, the lighthouse was an island for its keepers, or a keeper and assistant who were husband and wife. Very cautiously, in some cases they raised their children here, though one couple with a child who had a tendency to sleepwalk found their daughter taking a night-time stroll precariously close to the edge of the lighthouse.
Today the lighthouse resides just offshore in Port Lavaca at a park where palm trees and three flags--the Stars and Stripes, the state flag of Texas, and the city flag of Port Lavaca are shown catching the breezes of Matagorda Bay, and welcoming visitors to the area. It was honored with a Texas Historical Marker and today sits alongside Highway 35, adjacent to Port Lavaca's Bauer Community Center.
