Description
ONE OF MY SOLD IMAGES
Close-up vertical color photo of an Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja spp.), a common wildflower in the snapdragon family. In Texas, Indian Paintbrush are most often found along the highways or fields and hills in or near the Hill Country. They are frequently seen mixed with, or planted in fields adjacent to, Texas Bluebonnets (Lupinus texensis, L. subcarnosus) and other wildflowers.
In cropping and processing this image as a macro, I discovered what looked like green brushstrokes on the petals. Up close, the paintbrush looks unlike anything I've ever seen before or what I expected. What I thought were holes in the petals look like brushstrokes on the paintbrush!
As red-orange perennials, Indian paintbrush pop up on their own, but farmers and ranchers often seed their fields to provide solid color. Adjacent to the road or highway, one usually finds a mix of wildflowers--often with one type of flower and color predominating and others sprinkled in, creating random patterns of natural beauty.
In Texas (and probably in most states) it is illegal to pick wildflowers.
