Description
A mammoth and other extinct prehistoric animals on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, in Houston, Texas, USA. This particular animal is from the Pliocene Epoch (5 million years ago) into the Halocene (4500 years ago). It appears to be a mammoth rather than a mastadon because of its shorter body length.
These huge animals lived in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. They are members of the family Elepentidae, which contains, along with mammoth, the two genera of modern elephants and their ancestors. The males typically weighed in the range of 9 to 13 tons.
