Pleasure Pier Construction
Fine-art architecture, construction, and landmark photography by Connie Fox
Bright, clear daytime photo shows construction underway on a large building with an interesting curved roofline at Pleasure Pier, which opened Memorial Day weekend 2012 in Galveston, Texas (USA). Developer of this wonderful amusement park is Tilman Fertitta, CEO of Landry's.
This view shows the siding and insulation in place, the shape of the roofline, windows (including two that remind me of portholes) and insulation (Tyvek logo visible). A yellow-and-orange crane adds a sense of activity and human interest, as do several unidentifiable construction workers.
The old pier was built by the military in 1948, when Pleasure Pier was the largest of its kind in the country and initially served military families. It operated as a family destination for decades, but its amusement park was damaged in 1961 by Hurricane Carla.
In 1965 the Flagship Hotel was built on the pier. That Galveston landmark, however, was demolished after severe damage by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Ike was a major hurricane that created a storm surge from which the Houston-Galveston area continues to recover.
