Description
Red-roofed turret of the nineteenth-century landmark, the Hotel del Coronado, across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge from San Diego, California. As a child, I enjoyed Sunday brunch in the Crown Room--a room so vast, so delicious, with seemingly nothing holding up the ceiling.
"The Del" was designed to be grand in every respect, not only in its European-style grace and hospitality but in its electrifying presence. Each room is perfect in its appointments, and resplendent in stories. Since its opening in 1888, the Hotel del Coronado has hosted at least fifteen United States Presidents. It has served as a movie location, the subject of films, and a getaway for stars such as Greto Garbo, Mae West, Charlie Chaplin, Esther Williams, and Marilyn Monroe. Even Robert Todd Lincoln, son of the late president, stayed here in 1896. I am told that Frank Baum wrote the Wizard of Oz while staying in this hotel.
The Hotel del Coronado remains the crown jewel of the California coast. Pictured here are a few of the more than two million red shingles that cover its show-stopping roof.

Did you know that Frank Baum wrote "The Wizard of OZ" when he was staying at this hotel?
Connie Fox replied:
Carl, I remember hearing that from someone, and included it in my description. It doesn't surprise me, really, for "everybody who was anybody" stayed here. Though that's quite a piece of history! Interesting.
Dee Browning
Love how it draws the eye upward.
Connie Fox replied:
Thank you for pointing that out, Dee. I find it so interesting to learn what aspects appeal to other artists.

What a wonderful, appreciative comment, Mr. Kent. I had not thought of the lines as converging, but now I see what you mean. Thanks for pointing that out, and for your vote and fave.
