Description
Sun-bleached skeleton of an evergreen tree, uprooted by the violent, cataclysmic eruption of Mount St.Helen's the morning of May 18, 1980. It seems to be pointing to the formerly near-perfect mountain that brought such devastation.
Shot near Johnston Ridge Observatory in the inner blast zone, where nothing on the surface survived. Today you will find wildflowers and grasses on the rocky terrain where evergreens such as fir and hemlock once stood. Most of the downed trees have been removed, but this odd-shaped one remains, reminding visitors of what took place here in 1980, when everything changed in an instant.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.

It's so nice when people like you understand one's attempt to capture the art found in nature. This is indeed, as you said, like a wild sculpture. Thanks so much for your comment, Patricia, and for your vote and fave.
