Film image from 1993, updated in 2014 and given a painterly, textured look, showing people enjoying Slide Rock State Park on Oak Creek. At Slide Rock, the water suddenly drops to a lower level. This creates a thrilling ride for those up to the challenge, for one literally slides down a rock waterfall into the waters below.
Slide Rock, now a State Park, is part of the Pendley Homestead Historic District. You will find more information in the Description for the "1927 Pendley Homestead House" in this Arizona Gallery. The Pendley Homestead Historic District, including Historic Orchards and the house built in 1927, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Slide Rock Park was originally part of the homestead. It is located in Coconino National Forest, south of Flagstaff.
As a high school and college student in Arizona, I have great memories of this area when my girlfriends and I had Slide Rock all to ourselves. As a camper, I stayed in one of the bungalows built in the Thirties, three of which remain. Back then, in the Sixties, the area was unspoiled by tourism, and the fire that has closed Oak Creek Canyon until further notice.
With that sobering thought in mind, I am especially pleased to share my images of Slide Rock, Oak Creek Canyon, and Sedona. You will find them in my Arizona Gallery.
