Description
The Inner Harbour of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, upon arrival in Victoria by ferry. A large ferry and glass-bottomed boat are docked here. People who have just disembarked are milling around, making calls, and perhaps deciding what they'd like to see and do first in the beautiful capitol of British Columbia.
Named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and, at the time, British North America, Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, with British settlement beginning in 1843. Filled with English charm, the city has retained a large number of its historic buildings, in particular its two most famous landmarks, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, finished in 1897 and home of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. (Be sure to see my beautiful color photo of the Parliament Building. You will find it in my Architecture Gallery as well as my Washington-and-Canada Gallery.) Of course the other famous landmark is the Empress Hotel, opened in 1908. We loved the upscale shopping there, and enjoyed royal service at a lavish Indian luncheon buffet with a window view of the Inner Harbour.
Visitors flock to Victoria not only for its beauty and enjoyable sightseeing but for the temperate climate. I love Victoria because it combines elegance and formality with the casual ambience of being on the water.
