Thank you, John Bailey, for the feature in Images That Excite You! When we do manhole covers in Texas, we make them exciting! The tall ship Elissa is honored in Galveston, as she should be. She's a beauty.

Nice shot - wondering where the "un-sanitary sewer" might be.

Connie Fox replied:

Thanks, Terry. Well, now, you've got me thinking. It's too far to go looking for it, so I suppose I'll need to refer you to the Vulcan Company. Wonder if they're still around.

Artist's Description

Covered in a classy nautical style: Vintage cast iron manhole cover in the city of Galveston, Texas, decorated with an embossed image of the 1877 tall ship Elissa. The Elissa is a three-mast iron-hulled sailing ship built in 1877 in Aberdeen, Scotland, by Alexander Hall & Company. She is not a replica but a survivor, and a popular attraction at Pier 21, where she resides. She sails annually in the Gulf of Mexico, and is maintained by Galveston Historical Foundation volunteers.

This manhole cover bears the name Vulcan on the rust-colored, circular cast-iron embellished plate set among pavers. A manhole cover is a removable plate forming a lid over the opening of a manhole, to prevent anyone or anything from falling in, and to keep out unauthorized persons and material.

About Connie Fox

Connie Fox

This true aesthetic loves beautiful things, from architecture to the intricate details of flowers and plants. A native Californian who lived in Arizona before settling in Texas, I love nature, topography, and exploring small towns, looking for old buildings, unique objects, and rust. I enjoy making scenes look interesting and natural, as I saw them, and worthy of a place in your home, your office, your life. For 15 years I worked as a dental hygienist. Then I spent 25 years as an award-winning writer, graphic designer, and editorial consultant--skills I still use in this venue and in helping others with special projects. This unique background, requiring discernment and perfection, helps ensure the quality of my work. I hope you will...
