Description
Trunks of twin crepe myrtle trees in the woods have shed their leaves and bark, leaving interesting colors and patterns in brown, rust, and pale green against a bright-blue sky. This variety of crepe myrtle, Lagerstroemia indica, reaches 25 feet in height, and produces pale pink blossoms in summer.
Winter scene with no snow, shot in The Woodlands, Texas, while out for a walk. Emphasis is on the trunks; tree-tops are not shown. Most crepe myrtles (other than in a woodland setting or the tallest varieties) have been radically pruned at this time of the year in order to produce more glorious, colorful blossoms in the summer. Located in the woods and quite tall, this one has not been pruned. I don't prune mine either, for it's really not needed and produces unsightly knobs.

Love the light in this capture. Such interesting trees and coloring. Love it! (lf)
Connie Fox replied:
Thank you, Diann. The bark of a mature crepe myrtle is among the prettiest in nature. This one, growing wild and untrimmed, caught my eye on the nature trail. Sadly most people probably walked on by. But having a camera in hand helps us appreciate the spectacular world within reach. Thanks for appreciating it!
