Description
Active volcano Mount St. Helens the state of Washington, USA, showing the North Fork Toutle River and new growth as of 2012 at the Mount St. Helens National Monument. This area is the inner blast zone. The huge mile-wide crater shown here was created by a volcanic eruption in 1980, in which the north face of the tall symmetrical mountain collapsed in a massive avalanche of debris.
As of May 17, 1980 Mount St. Helens, in the Cascade Range, was considered one of the most perfect mountains in the world. But shaken by an earthquake that registered 5.1 on the Richter scale, the active volcano erupted at 8:32 a.m. on a Sunday morning, May 18, 1980. This area is open to visitors today, with guided tours available through the Visitors Center. If you are visiting the state of Washington, this should be on your must-see list.

My sincere thanks, Dan, for choosing to feature "Crater at Mount St. Helens 2012" on the homepage of Premium FAA Artists. I am honored, for I felt while there that I was standing on sacred ground. This recent resubmission with improvements shows more details of the upheaval and destruction that forever changed one of the two most perfectly shaped mountains in the world.
