Closeup black-and-white photograph of the historic 1900 belfry at Liberty Baptist Church, Independence, Texas, USA. This image fills the entire frame, except for a small portion of cloudless sky seen on each side. The point of view and black-and-white conversion hint of an abstract, though this image is intended to document an important era in American history.
The Texas Historical Commission Official Historical Medallion on the front of the church, placed there in 2003 to designate it as a Texas Historic Landmark, reads as follows:
This church has historic ties to Independence Baptist Church. In 1871, following Emancipation, former slaves established their own congregation, naming it in honor of their new freedom. The church, which began with 150 members, held services in a number of buildings before completing the original part of the present structure in 1900.
