Description
FEATURED ON THE FAA HOMEPAGE
Restored slide film photograph of Camelback Mountain, an iconic geographical landmark in Phoenix, Arizona, as viewed from Papago Park in 1960. The distinctive red sandstone geological formations of Papago Park were formed some 6–15 million years ago. One such formation is Hole-in-the-Rock, a major landmark that I remember from high school and college days. This image shows a vast stretch of natural desert plants and tall saguaro cactus, with a large blue agave plant in the foreground.
In 1959, the state-owned portion of Papago Park was sold to the city of Phoenix. Today Papago Park is a hilly desert park covering 1200 acres in its Phoenix extent and 296 acres in its Tempe extent. Amenities include the Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo, hiking trails, several small lakes, bicycle paths, and more.
Image has been restored and slightly enhanced with some texture to show the rugged natural landscape as I remember it. Cloudless blue sky. No people are seen, though their presence is implied by four parked cars. Sometimes life is like that, and we feel deserted on a vast wasteland. Thus the title. Yet we know that time can bring good changes, even when hope seems gone and people we thought were there simply vanish like a mirage.
