Artistic rendering of an original film photograph of a long white road on the floor of Canyon de Chelly, leading the eye to homes carved out of the low mesa ahead. Framed by high walls of red sandstone cliffs to each side and a beautiful blue sky above.
This is just one of several hundred prehistoric Anasazi Indian villages carved into the cliffs of steep canyon walls in Canyon de Chelly (duh shay) National Monument, within the borders of the Navajo Nation, near Chinle in northeastern Arizona.
Each of these dark indents, or holes, represents someone's dwelling. When you see how high most of the others are, it is easy to conclude that these must be the most accessible, perhaps for seniors with knee problems who would find it difficult to climb a ladder to get into the house.
