Description
Closeup facial view of a long-eared Nubian goat with her slumbering baby goats, called kids, at the 2011 Houston Livestock Show.
Nubian goats are large in size, with markings of any color. Its ears are long, pendulous, and floppy. They have a very round nose, referred to as a Roman nose. The temperament of the Nubian is sociable, outgoing, and vocal, with a gentle personality. They are hardy, curious, and intelligent. With its elongated ears and sleek body, the Nubian has acquired a variety of nicknames: Lop-eared Goat, Rabbit Goat, Long-eared Goat, and Greyhound Goat. They are known for high-quality, high-butterfat milk production, which in turn makes very high-quality cheese.
These intelligent animals know what they like and dislike, and can be taught a routine such as the milking procedure, cooperating each step of the way and handling many of the steps on their own. Most are kept for milk, meat, or hair, with some kept as companions and work animals.
