Description
Natural beauty in rural Alaska, as seen from the shore of the Susitna River in the small town of Talkeetna. We had stopped in Talkeetna for breakfast as part of our Princess Cruise. Sadly a park ranger had drowned in this river just a day or two before we arrived. I think this river has many more stories to tell.
Someone gave us a tip: If we walked to the end of a winding dirt path through a wooded area, we would come to "a lake," which was actually a river. If we looked to the right, we would see Mount McKinley, which was soon (later that week) to be renamed Denali, its native name.
We started walking fast, for our tour-bus would soon leave. Coming toward us was a couple who did not look too excited. We asked them if Denali was at the end of the path. They said no, just a lake and a boat. That did not seem right, so we asked the only person in sight: a lady selling snow-cones. She pointed to the path we had been on, and we followed it to the lake, which turned out to be the Susitna River. We saw no boat, but we did see one of the most famous mountains in the world, Mount McKinley (Denali).
At 20,320 feet, Denali is the tallest mountain in North America. From its base to its highest peak, the South Peak, it is considered the tallest mountain in the world, and growing in size.
Alongside Denali, in the Alaska Range shown in this image, you will see Kahitna Dome (roundish). Similar scenes in this Alaska Gallery include Mount Foraker as well, elevation 17,400 feet.
