Description
Sun-bleached skeleton of a tree, uprooted by the violent, cataclysmic eruption of Mount St.Helens the morning of May 18, 1980. One can see lava rock entangled in the roots of the tree. Those rocks may have originated inside the mountain.
Black-and-white conversion of the color image you will also find in my Washington State album. Shot near Johnston Ridge Observatory, in the inner blast zone, where nothing survived. Today youll find wildflowers and grasses on the rocky terrain where evergreens such as fir and hemlock once stood. Most of the downed trees have been removed, but this freaky-shaped one remains, reminding visitors of what took place here in 1980, when everything changed in an instant.
