This coastline photograph features mountain topography, and the gentle blues and sparkling waters of Glacier Bay, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, USA. In the foreground of this scenic landscape and seascape is Gloomy Knob, backed by snow-capped peaks and a glimpse of Lamplugh Glacier to the right, all beneath a cloudless blue sky.
Climate enthusiasts: Please note that only the glacial formations on the east side of Glacier Bay are receding. On the opposite side of the bay they are advancing. How can this be true? In the chilly waters of the bay you will see particles of ice from nearby glaciers that have calved, or thrown off ice in the process of advancing. Those directly across the bay are causing this ice to drift here. The receding and advancing glaciers are in close proximity—sometimes right next to each other!
The reason behind the differences, whether advancing or receding: At Glacier Bay, each glacier and rock formation is part of two distinctly different mountain ranges. These ranges—not climate change, a natural occurrence throughout history--determine how their respective glaciers behave. This should teach us to dig deeper for the facts for ourselves, couple it with our own experience, and not believe everything we’re told.
In my Alaska Cruise Tour Gallery, you will find other versions of glacial peaks and Gloomy Knob—not a small rock formation but one that a small cruise ship such as ours could get quite close to. Small ships can get much closer to the beautiful terrain, and one can spot wildlife more easily from a small ship. Megaships in Glacier Bay are currently a subject of contention as there is talk of whether to allow them in this small space. We were on a 500-passenger ship. It was well-appointed with plenty of room to maneuver in Glacier Bay. One can take an even smaller boat, made specifically for excursions. These are the sizes I would recommend for one of America’s most pristine and stunning national parks.
