Question: Why can't we see Denali?
On our Alaskan cruise-tour, we met people who had traveled from as far away as Australia, hoping in vain to see Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley. Yet others might see it several times on one trip. We counted at least half a dozen sightings. This experience, which some might call a non-sighting, or a disappointment, actually proved to be the most interesting of all. So where was Denali? Well . . . "hiding"!
Our source at the Denali Wilderness Lodge told us that Denali has its own climate system and sometimes cannot be seen at all. The National Park Service website explains:
____
Denali is so massive that it generates its own weather; much the way a huge boulder submerged in a river creates whitewater rapids. All mountains deflect air masses and influence local conditions, but Denali rises so abruptly and so high that this effect is more dramatic here than perhaps anywhere else on Earth. Storms barrel in from the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea and collide with Denali’s towering mass. Weather can quickly change from sunny and clear to blizzard conditions with fierce winds, intense cold, and heavy snowfall. Climbers must understand and pay close attention to warning signs of changing weather, and use their observations to plan when to climb, when to retreat, and when to dig in.
____
"The heavens are telling of the glory of God, and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands."
–Psalm 19:1
Search "Denali" in this and other of my galleries in order to see more images of Denali. I recall seeing it from the George Parks Highway as we traveled south from here to Talkeetna. You will find several views of Denali among my Talkeetna images, too, with one or more showing Denali (not hiding) alongside its Alaskan Range companions.
I have my own theory about why Denali goes into hiding. Like certain types of people, it enjoys the publicity and widespread attention. But sometimes it just needs time alone.
