Description
Sunlight dances on the reeds, leaves, and plumes throughout this black-and-white version of Texas prairie grass, resembling bamboo and set as a group or hedge against a cloudless sky. While trying to identify this grass, I discovered The Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT), a non-governmental non-profit organization dedicated to protecting land in Texas.
This image is also available in color in my Rural Texas and other galleries. It was photographed in what is known as the Prairies and Lakes region, a tall stretch filled with ranchland that runs inland from the Houston area, north to south. It is one of several major regions that include the Gulf Coast, Hill Country, Panhandle, Piney Woods, and Big Bend. The Prairies and Lakes region includes Katy, Sealy, Columbus, Bellville, Fayetteville, La Grange, Round Top, Independence, and other inland towns. This is classic pioneer country.
These grasses were found along a gravel road in Austin County, but one can find them in many places in throughout Texas. Putting the focus on them, as if kissed by the sun on this clear winter's day, gives one an appreciation for their height, presence, and beauty. This large-format image would work well as a focal point, perhaps over a sofa or in an office. I hope you will visit all my Texas images and enjoy this spectacular state that I am blessed to call home.
