Description
In this uncropped black-and-white photograph, also available in color, one lone new evergreen stands tall and straight, dwarfed by Mount St. Helens, an active volcano in the Cascade Range in the state of Washington, USA.
As of May 17, 1980, Mount St. Helens was considered one of the most perfect mountains in the world. Shaken and reshaped, however, by an earthquake that registered 5.1 on the Richter scale, the mountain erupted at 8:32 a.m. on a Sunday morning, May 18, 1980.
The huge crater, shown here with what appears to be mist emerging, was created by that eruption. The north face of the tall, symmetrical mountain collapsed in a massive avalanche of debris. This view shows the North Fork Toutle River.
