In this sepia tint photograph, bold embossed carvings embellish a traditional Victorian staircase at the Ant Street Inn, a charming bed-and-breakfast in Brenham, Texas, USA. Surrounded by hand-hewn hardwood flooring, likely hickory, the staircase features a thick square fluted box newel (the main post, likely rosewood) with a pointed cap and square fluted balusters (posts). The treads, or steps, are a darker wood, perhaps mahogany. This image is also available in color and black-and white, but the sepia is my personal favorite..

The Ant Street Inn has a 107 address and is located in a building constructed in the 1890s, now a Texas registered historic landmark. This lovely boutique hotel features many pieces of unique antiques, symbols of status and fortune for the middle class in those times. The Ant Street Inn was photographed on a visit in 2014, with permission of the staff. Victorian architecture and construction were noted for embellishment and attention to detail, and included ornate carvings, embossing, detail, texture. Woods were typically rosewood, mahogany, and oak. The wood floors in this case, judging by the age of the building and its location, are likely hickory, for there are many pecan trees in the area.
