Description
Yes, it was night in Hawaii. This image was shot at least half an hour after the sun had fully set near Kaanapali, Maui. It was DARK, as in black. The lesson, to be learned through experience: what is meant by "the blue hour." Captured with a Minolta film camera and flash, with everyone around me saying, "It won't turn out! It will never work! Don't waste your film." (Back in the days of film, when we had to pay for every single image we shot.)
Urged on by a hunch that I needed to go for that one last shot of the day, I took a chance, and was stunned to see that it turned out after all: Mostly blue, with the palms in green. Yet standing there in the sand, all I could see were the palms. I had captured the "Blue Hawaii" made famous in the song by Elvis Presley! Lesson learned.
Strongly blue and green with a dreamy, ethereal look, this image also shows Venus and Mars. Night shot from shore to sea after a sunset catamaran cruise at Kaanapali, Maui. A covered boat and palm trees are seen in the foreground. You can easily see Venus toward the far left. Though much smaller, Mars is visible, too, amidst the palm fronds. Lower resolution image suitable for framing and small projects. (I have a lovely 5x7 framed in my home.)

Fantastic film capture, Connie! Enjoy the movement of the palms and that gorgeous blue hour with the planet! Excellent! F/L
Connie Fox replied:
What a wonderful comment, Kathy. Thank you. Even more poignant (if that were possible), this might actually have been Lahaina, just south of Kaanapali. We had just arrived on land after our dinner cruise on a catamaran. It's a wonderful world, filled with splendid moments in time.

Wonderful feedback, Teresa. I find it so helpful--and especially appreciate the L/F and your vote in the contest. Thank you very much!.

Shawn, that's a wonderful compliment. Thank you so much. It's straight out of the camera--film as I recall--and except for a little cleanup, is as-shot. I was stunned, and people tried to talk me out of taking it, for all the light of the day appeared to be gone. Taught me a good lesson on possibilities.

Thank you, Chrisann, for featuring this personal favorite in Weekly Fun For All Mediums! Lovely.

Thanks, Dan, for featuring "Blue Hawaii With Planets at Night" in Premium FAA Artists. What a treat to see both Venus and Mars that night in Maui. Both are in this image, which I was told would never turn out. It was literally a shot in the dark!

Pamela, thank you for featuring this image in 3-a-Day Waiting Room Art. That's wonderful news, and I really appreciate it.

Terry Cobb, I am delighted that you have chosen my first image posted to FAA and featured it on the homepage of Seen But Not Noticed. On another site, it was also my very first sale! Thanks for the encouragement and helping to get the word out. Hope those interested in this image will also read the description. I learned a great lesson that evening under "impossible" circumstances.

I'm so pleased that you returned for another visit, Andrew. That's a fine compliment. Thanks, too, for mentioning what you like. I'm so glad I didn't give up on this shot!
Andrew James
Hi Connie back for a second visit, it's the movement in the palms that I love so much here. The almost blue tone finish is just superb.
Connie Fox
Thank you, Andrew, for your wonderful comment. It was May 2006, and this shot was not supposed to turn out--at least according to others. (See Description.) It was a most interesting moment in time, for I learned that "Blue Hawaii" is far more than a movie title. What the human eye sees as almost pitch-dark is actually blue! This was one of my very first sales on another site. Thanks for your vote and fave!
Suzanne Gaff
Would love to go there! Such a mysterious shot! Blessings, Suzanne fav/L
Connie Fox replied:
Hope you'll put Maui on your bucket list, Suzanne. It's divine. Thank you for your kind words about this image, and for your L/F.
