Description
Piles of dead and weathered tree trunks lie in piles like matchsticks, along with a handful of evergreens, on an otherwise barren hill within the Inner Blast Zone near the active volcano Mount St. Helens.
Filling the background is a rocky portion of the same zone that was pulverized in the eruption, leaving exposed rock and no place for trees. Occasionally one will see a hardy volunteer plant emerge from the cracks and crevices between the broken rocks, but nothing more.
