Description
Piles of dead and weathered tree trunks lie in piles like matchsticks, along with a handful of evergreens, on an otherwise barren hill within the Inner Blast Zone near the active volcano Mount St. Helens. Converted by black-and-white. The color version is also available in my Mount St. Helens and other galleries.
Filling the background is a rocky portion of the same zone that was pulverized in the eruption, leaving exposed rock and no place for trees. Occasionally one will see a hardy volunteer plant emerge from the cracks and crevices between the broken rocks, but nothing more.
Nikon D80, Nikkor 50mm/f1.8 lens (circular polarizer) and ND filter, shot outdoors with available light. No sky; no people

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
