Description
This Kodak film photo, an expansive landscape given a painterly look in 2014, was shot in 1993 midway between Apache Junction and Roosevelt, on the famous 30-mile road known as the Apache Trail. In the late 1800s, this was one of the areas Apache chiefs Geronimo and Nachez hung out.
The Apache Trail, Highway 88, begins east of the Phoenix, Arizona, USA, metropolitan area. If you have ever wondered what it means when a road is marked by a dotted line on the map, you will learn firsthand by driving this rugged but well-maintained road. Allow plenty of time for your spectacular drive through the Superstition Wilderness.
The road was built in the early 1900s as a supply route for the construction of Roosevelt Dam. President Theodore Roosevelt compared the trail to a journey through the Alps. Jagged ridges, towering cliffs, sheer rock walls, and breathtaking views reward the visitor.
The road is paved from Apache Junction to Canyon Lake. Then it continues on as 25 miles of dirt road. Watch for narrow bridges, blind curves, and sheer drops.
Shot in the summer of 1993 with a Minolta Freedom Escort and Kodak film. Scanned in 2014 and given a gentle painterly look. You will more of these restored Arizona film images in this Arizona Gallery. Although they are limited to smaller print sizes, they would make a beautiful grouping for a wall of your home or office. They have been sized to fit the 5x7 greeting card format, too, making the cards easy to frame yourself.
