Description
Tea for Two by Connie Fox
Square vintage still-life photograph
The hand-embroidered tablecloth is starched and ironed, except for the folds that come from being stored. What else is needed before company arrives at teatime, traditionally 4 p.m. A few flowers from the garden, one more spoon, napkins, some treats on the glass plate. Everything else is in place for this special time between friends. Tea for two.
Nostalgic and pretty still-life image, cropped to a square. Featuring a patterned teapot, vintage china and serving pieces, and a small clock, set on an embroidered white linen tablecloth. It’s a perfectly imperfect setting that still awaits a few final touches for time set aside with a friend. Time to talk, reminisce, catch up on local news and gossip. Time to learn who has gone off to war and who has received a telegram.
Despite challenges, beauty and refinement once had a special place in daily life—and time was set aside to enjoy a cup of tea with a friend—originally at 4 p.m. because dinner was served later, around 8 p.m. In keeping with British tradition still observed today, the hostess would serve treats such as sandwiches, scones, or cake along with the tea. The idea now is to provide a treat in the hours between lunch and dinner, or supper, and a cup of tea and some food can help.
