Description
Side shot of the nose detail of a B-17G in color, showing the Thunderbird insignia of the state of Arizona. At the lower right edge, you will also see a cap that I chose not to clone out. The cap has the words U.S.S. Arizona and veteran, and may be worn by an actual veteran of the U.S.S. Arizona, which is memorialized at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Shot at the Wings Over Houston Air Show, Houston, Texas, October 26, 2013.
This B-17 model, the B-17G, was used by the following squadrons of the 8th Air Force: 508, 509. 510, and 511. Posted December 31, 2013, in memory of my father on the second anniversary of his passing. He flew 31 missions from Polebrook, England, returned home unscathed, and lived to be 90. Posted in honor of all who have faithfully served.
On behalf of the Commemorative Air Force, which produces Wings Over Houston, The Point Group has granted permission to display this and other images from this years air show. My thanks to these organizations. According to Wings Over Houston, publicity for the show greatly benefits our community, so feel free to promote.

My Uncle Ernie was a tail gunner on B-17s over Germany towards the end of the war, Connie. By that time the planes were no longer painted olive drab over grey, just silver aluminum. Escort P-51s with aux gas drop tanks went with them all the way. He told me flak from German 88s was still nerve racking though. Wonderful story about your Father.....fav / like
Connie Fox replied:
Thank you so much, Jerry, for your interesting comment! Yes, lots of flak. I remember my dad mentioning that. I thought for sure I had responded to you, so please forgive me for being a little late. Always grateful for your support.
