Description
In a southern garden in the greater Houston area, Texas, USA, the focus is on one fully open bright white vinca, or periwinkle flower, covered with raindrops. Green leaf background and a second flower blurred in profile. No sky and no people.
Vincas, or periwinkle, are a favorite for hot summers in Texas. They are one of the few flowering plants that do well in scorching heat. They are bright and pretty, and tend to reseed and return as perennials the following year. I like to use white periwinkles to line a walkway, for they can be seen easily at night. This bank of white summer-lovers was used last year to draw the eye to a small garden in a far corner. Periwinkles resemble impatiens, but impatiens do better in shade and are not the best choice for an area that takes a beating from the hot summer sun. That's when vincas, or periwinkles, shine.
